May round-up: To Bell and back…

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

This month saw Bonfire with a pitch win for the design of the printed collateral for Bell International. With over 30,000 people a year and 25 teaching centres in 11 different countries, Bell is the worldwide market leader in the provision of high quality English language training services.

This month also saw Steve and Kayte return from Peru after completing the Inca Trail and raising £6,647.81 for Macmillan Cancer Support, so a big thank you to everybody for their support and kind donations. Mind you I can think of easier ways of spending your honeymoon!! The photos from the trek including the stunning views, ruins have now been put online for all to see, browse at you leisure by clicking here.

And just to close this month on another high note Steve and Kayte have just announced that they are expecting, there will be another Judge creating chaos as from a predicted December 11th 2007 – lets hope it isn’t two weeks late else that will be one laden Santa!

Until next month.

Boo! February round-up!

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Well hello and as another month passes we’re already flying through 2007.

Firstly we’d like to thank everyone who entered our ‘bon l’amour’ competition the response was very impressive. All comments and feedback will be used in the future development of our site. In fact the response was so good that we decided to extend the prize giving. Additional to the draw winner Lisa (you know who you are) getting the Red iPod Nano, the following four names pulled from the hat got an iPod shuffle! So congratulations to you all and thanks for your support. All in all the competition was a great success and we are looking at making competitions a regular feature of our site.

Aside from this we’ve been very busy indeed; the phase 2 Leith’s site went live earlier this month all programmed in .NET; we’ve been working on our new identity (yes we’ve decided to give it a revamp); we’ve been commissioned to produce a suite of 9 brochures for Cranfield University; we co-ran a design workshop for young people in order to produce the county wide Youth Charter for Bedfordshire; we started work on the LCAL website; oh and Steve climbed a tree for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf!

To top it all off we are about to launch another competition in the next few days called ‘I love Ampthill’. This is a local community project to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The winner of this will receive a framed large format canvas print of their work and it will go on permanent display for all to see in the entrance foyer to our studios! So pop back in a few days to get the low down.

Last and certainly not least we would like to welcome Andrew Foster on board. Andrew joins us from Bedford College and I’m sure he will make a great addition to the Bonfire team.

That’s about it for this month see you in 4 weeks with some more updates.

Wow!!!

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Well as some of you will be aware the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) set up The Design Association earlier this year.

Launched in March by CEO Frank Peters MCSD FRSA MIoD, with public speaking from Wally Olins, the association has been set up to accredit “the design of the business and the business of design”. The application assessments started in August.

2 weeks ago we had confirmation that we had passed the first four stages and that it was now down to the work assessment.

Last week we got the news that not only had we passed and gained the prestigious award but we were the first consultancy in the UK to be fully accredited! So keep your eyes open for the press coverage over the coming weeks and months!

Wow!

Welcome to Nick Colyer!

Monday, July 17th, 2006

Nick Colyer is joining us for the summer for a work placement, having just finished his HND at Bedford College and a previous working placement at Connexions, Bedfordshire and Luton.

Nick will be with us until at the end of september to further his academic achievements to date and upgrade his HND to an Honours Degree at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Hopefully he’ll be smiling by the end of the placement!

Welcome to Christopher Valentine!

Monday, July 10th, 2006

Welcome to Christopher who joins us this week for his work experience from Cardinal Newman School in Luton. Chris is following his current interest in becoming a designer. He had found it quite hard to get a placement at an agency and we were only too happy to help.

This follows a similar placement last year and helps build and re-affirm our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy as a growing agency.

It’s all about connexions?

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

After an initial presentation to Connexions (Bedfordshire & Luton), and an advertising project with a student at Bedford College, Bonfire have been appointed to develop a suite of  8 information packs for Connexions.

The pocket sized packs will be presented in display boxes, colour coded for easy reference and carry useful information on issues such as homelessness, relationships, self-harm and alcohol.

Connexions is a national service that provides advice, guidance, support and personal development services for all 13 – 19 year olds. The Connexions Partnership Bedfordshire & Luton is a service, first and foremost, for young people – planned with young people – and delivered alongside young people in order to give every young person the best start in life.

This also marks a  new development in Bonfire’s already broad Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, as an integral part of the relationship will be expanding the opportunities we already give to students and pupils, by way of work experience and placements, to encompass ‘on the project’ training, through the Connexions work, enabling students to get involved with live projects, client meetings and see their work to print.

If you know or are a young person living in Bedfordshire looking for help, advice or guidance in any area of your life contact Connexions by visiting www.connx.org.uk

Bedford Design Clinic

Friday, April 15th, 2005

After much planning Jeffrey Tribe from Bedford College succeeded in organising, for today, the first of what will hope to be a regular occurence for the local design and business community in Bedford.

‘Design Clinic’ is a forum for everyone involved with marketing, communication and design. It is a unique event aimed at promoting the exchange of knowledge, experiences and views for the benefit of the local design community, industry, commerce and edcuation.

Starting with a buffet, the event was held at the new Bedford iLab business complex on Prior Business Park, plays host to five guest speakers; Ian Silverstein (founder of Creative Action design); Peter Wagstaff (Founder of Wagstaff’s Design); Tony Chambers (Founding Partner of One Strategic Communications); Keith Freshwater (Creative Director of Oak Communications); and a one John Simmons FRSA (Former Verbal Identity Director from Interbrand).

Currently Director of The Writer and freelance brand consultant, John Simmons specialises in advising major UK organisations on how to communicate their brands effectively and creatively with words. John introduced and entertained the audience wonderfully with his philosophies, experience and learning (he also signed my copy of his book ‘The Trouble with Words’ which has been sitting on my desk for the last 10 years!).

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable event for which there will hopefully be a successor. Well done Jeff!

A big thank you?

Friday, February 11th, 2005

This is a personal thank you from Steve for everyone that donated to Macintyre Care after his girlfriends untimely and unfortunate passing away. In total just under £4000 was raised which is an amazing amount, but an amount that will provide untold enjoyment for those for which Ruth cared for at Macintyre.

The money will be spent on many areas, but with a focus on the music and dance aspects within which Ruth had particular interest. Items such as a Camcorder, Keyboard, Digital Camera, TV, Video, DVD player and the redecoration of the day room, re-carpeting of the craft room, the redecorating of outside facilities/replacement of benches and the painting of playground games onto the courtyard are but a few of the benefits for the users of the service provided at Macintyre Care.

A big hand and thanks to all, from Steve and the families.

Ruth Naomi Binks

Saturday, December 4th, 2004

Steve would like to extend his thanks to everyone for their patience, consideration and thoughtful messages over the past couple of weeks.

All of you will have noticed the young lady, giving you the short of Bonfire Design, both here at the front of our website, and on our Site Test Mailer sent out in October.

As some of you knew, this was Ruth, Steve’s partner of 4 and a half years. Unfortunately Ruth left us peacefully on 28th November having been diagnosed two weeks earlier with lung cancer. Ruth was full of energy, life, smiles and found her own happiness from helping others.

Donations in Ruth’s memory will be made to her place of work, Macintyre Care, where she found great happiness working with adults with special needs. Steve and Ruth’s family thought it only right that any donations should be used to help them carry on their wonderful work. Any donations are to be made payable to either Stephen Judge or David Binks, her father, and will be sent to Macintyre Care through Bonfire Design.

Steve would also like offer special thanks to Prism Digital Print and Digital Displays for their help with the printing for Ruth\’s service documentation and their kind donations.

Bonfire in collaboration with college

Monday, September 27th, 2004

Following our sponsorship of Bedford College’s end of year show 2004 we have now got involved on another level, continuing our support.

We have written a visual communications brief for the year 2 students of the Graphic Design ND course with a communications project. The project derived from our own working environment.

The most cliched thing for agencies to do is put their own work up around the studio and offices. What we’ve been doing for the last couple of years is setting personal projects within the company and creating artworks that represent things we do or say in the day to day running of the business and it is this from where the brief stems.

The brief consists of the students researching and developing concepts around 3 phrases or quotes from the marketing communications market place, one of which must come from our own collateral. The students will then present their ideas to the rest of the group and they will decide collectively which route they carry forward – this would represent the ‘clients choice’. The chosen phrase will then be developed into a visual piece of communication using any mediums 3D or 2D but must not exceed 2 in size.

We hope to develop this partnership with future projects and work placements.
